The variety of Belly Dance

As the Middle and Far East spans over several different countries the dance also shows a variety of different styles including Folkloric styles from Egypt, North Africa, Saudi Arabia, other Middle Eastern countries, India, Greece and Turkey, but there are also more modern styles like "Classical Egyptian", "Cabaret" and more recently the so called "Tribal Style", a fusion style using folkloric and modern elements from the countries above to create an impressive and powerful art form.

In all these styles you will find a variety of different movements from walks, turns, glides, shimmies, soft and sharp movements, undulations, circles, head, arm and hand movements. All those dance movements evolved from natural movements but are not used very often in western cultures, especially the specific "isolated" movements.

And there are different costumes for different styles. Folkloric dances are mostly performed in body covering costumes with long sleeves and often a hair cover. Classical Egyptian and Cabaret style are styles where the "two part costumes" with bra and belt are used. Tribal style costumes often have several layers including harem pants, skirts, scarfs, tassel belts, coin belts, a coin bra or choli top and some kind of head dress.

Veils, finger cymbals, cane, sword, straw baskets, trays, depending on the style, can be used in all of the different styles
